Sarah Hale

Born and educated in the state of Maine, Sarah Hale first saw the wax resist art of batik during a year of teaching English in Japan. In 1969, she went to Toronto, met and married the late Lorne Hale, and they moved to the small village of Arden, Ontario. There, Sarah began to experiment with batik as a vehicle for depicting the Canadian Shield landscape surrounding her home.

Within a few years, Sarah and Lorne had created a business, Arden Batik, making batik landscapes and cards, and selling from their Arden studio and at art and craft fairs. They participated in many juried shows and festivals in Ontario, Quebec, New York and Vermont. Her work is available at the Cornerstone store in Kingston, and the Riverguild in Perth. Her studio in Arden is open by chance or appointment year round.
